Hietala, A Taste of Lapland
Good Food in the Heart of the Village

A Place to Gather
The beautiful and idyllic courtyard is home to the World’s Smallest Pub, as well as a traditional barn and barn bar, which come to life during summer events.
Hietala’s Small Red House offers an atmospheric meeting place for groups and a unique setting for themed dinners.
A House Full of Stories
The treasures of Hietala include art, crafts and hunting trophies, as well as stories from the history and mysticism of Lapland.
The Hietala farm was founded in 1857. The current main building was built in 1914 and served as an inn during its first decades. From 1947 to 1958, the building was home to the Kierinki primary school.
The renowned historian of Lapland, Samuli Paulaharju, also stayed at Hietala while collecting stories and interviews about Lapland between 1910 and 1922. Among them were stories about Eeva Kurtti of Kierinki, remembered as the last witch of Lapland.

From an Old Inn to Hietala Today
The main building stood uninhabited for around 20 years until the Holopainen family bought the property and carefully renovated it into a restaurant.
Today, Hietala brings together local food, village life and more than a century of stories under the same roof.
